Just a Small Campus Girl Livin in a Big Campus World

I didn't have much to do today, so I had a lot of time to myself, which wasn't bad. Today, my only classes were:

Anthropology of Food: 9-10
Traditional Irish Music: 4-5

Anthropology was fun, and I know I'm going to pay attention because it's about food. In all seriousness though, it will be interesting to learn more about how food brings a culture together and defines it in its own way. My teacher was a very kind man from Africa, and, though he doesn't speak English very well, has plenty of jokes.

After class, I decided to go for a run to try to see if I could find my way back to the apartment. I wasn't as chilly as I thought I'd be, the sun was shining, and I only got lost once. Maybe I can make a habit of it and then know my way around better than my peers.

Because classes are so large here, some professors require tutorials, which are just small group meetings that happen a few times during the semester. Students have to sign up for them, and boy, is it difficult! Kayla and I got lost looking for the philosophy department today (turns out it was on the opposite side of the building) only to find that no one from the department has office hours on Tuesdays. Instead, we found this on the door:

"Students, eh? Love 'em or hate 'em, you're not allowed to hit 'em with a shovel."

So, clearly, I feel very safe coming back to try to sign up again. Then, we tried to find where to drop off our papers for our religion class, and then really got lost because we didn't even know what building it was in. There aren't huge signs labeling every building like at Saint Marys, but I know that I can get the hang of it.

I had more time to myself, and didn't want to sit alone in my room. Instead, I went around town, glancing inside shops, seeing where different alleys lead, and just taking in the fact that I get to make this new place my home, and how incredibly lucky I am to have the opportunity to do so. The sky got dark when I went, but I promise there will be pictures before I leave.

My music class turned out to be my worst nightmare. The professor apparently has exams every week where you have to listen to the music and identify different parts and aspects of the song. Then there's lots of essays and reading, and necessary background knowledge that I don't have. Hopefully, I'll be able to switch in to another course.

I miss my family very much, but I'm trying hard to keep myself busy and not slip into a mess. I hope everyone is doing well and feels a little better reading this. I know I feel loads better knowing you guys read a post. If you ever want to contact me, I can use iMessage, email, or you can leave me a comment. I'd love to hear from anyone. Thank you all for being there for me, I'll try my hardest not to let you down in my posting!
