A Day in the Souks

The plane ride was incredibly long, and I got a little sick sitting next to the window, but it was worth it when we finally flew over the mountains and the desert. I had an amazing view that I felt so lucky to catch as we were waiting to land.

I couldn't believe I was actually here
When we arrived in the airport, we had to immediately change money, in which I became the richest I've ever been (and probably ever will be) in my life. Ten dirham is the equivalent of one euro or one dollar, to help you out. A man from our hostel was there to pick us up and helped us to our room. It was late when we arrived, but we still wanted to go out and check out the square, as well as eat. Morocco doesn't have much variety when it comes to food. It's a lot of couscous, which is what I ate for my first meal.

Check out those vegetables
Out in the square was quite the experience. It was incredibly busy, and a little scary, for there were barely any women to be seen, but plenty of creepy men out in the dark. We ended up going home quickly, and ended the night with a nice check on the view at the top of our hostel.

Lighting is a little harsh, but I still like it
In the morning, we headed out early to explore. We had a traditional Moroccan breakfast on the roof of one of the restaurants in the square. Basically, it was crepes and honey with mint tea to wash it down.

So yummy
I actually loved this tea

Besides creepy men yelling profanities at us, the souks were pretty cool. There were so many different colorful items, from candle holders to scarves to pillow covers, to hair oil. It was basically a maze where there were vendors down every single path, and the sunlight could be very difficult to find.

We'd get lost for a little while, then recognize a shop. Getting twisted around was so easy. However, getting lost is how one discovers some of the most amazing things, and it's how we came across the spice square. However, we didn't really care about the spices, because two of the vendors had animals that we wanted to play with. One had turtles and chameleons, and the other had lizards and snakes. In trying to make me buy one of the chameleons, the vendor put it on my head to try to make it turn the color of my hair, after we watched it change to the color of a leaf. But, as you can see, it really creeped me out.

Little freaked out
It was too hot to stay out once noon hit, so we had to go back to our hostel until dinner. Then we found another place with a view where I had a similar meal, but this time with chicken. Let it be known that when meat is included in a meal here, they don't bother to take the bones out. So, I spent a lot of dinner fishing the bones out of my meal to make sure I didn't die.

We took another lap farther into town before it got too dark to take another look at the city. We saw the mosque as the sun set, but then headed back to our hostel.
